A pony will amble through Sai Kung town on Sunday evening with a trail of small children dressed all in white. With white wings, white halos and white lanterns, the kids will be acting as angels. It’s the annual nativity procession with Mary riding a pony, a youngster representing Joseph walking alongside and the Archangel Gabriel hovering nearby. This procession will be seen walking through the centre of Sai Kung twice this Sunday, 8 December. What could be more lovely at this time of the year in a city still somewhat depressed?
It all begins after 7:00 pm from Sacred Heart Church. Mary on the back of the pony and the children trailing will set off down the hill across Po Tung Road, then walk slowly by the Tin Hau Temple. They will cross the basketball court then enter Man Yee Square. As happens every year, people will come out of the bars and restaurants gaping. When they realise what they are looking at they will clap, cheer and cry “Merry Christmas”, some with tears in their eyes.
The procession will cross Man Nin Street and go through the gardens to the waterfront. Then they will turn back and retrace their steps to Sacred Heart Church. At the church there will be a live presentation of the nativity scene. Mulled wine and canapes will be laid out. Everyone is invited.
The organiser of this charming annual event is Nam Shan resident Carlo Basto Clark of Ampleforth Centre for Theology and Spirituality. Ms Clark has said anyone is welcome to follow the procession, especially children who are asked to dress all in white.
