Star-gazing is not a safe hobby – well, not for two unfortunate men who had to be rescued by police when surrounded by wild dogs and boars.

The active period of the Geminid Meteor Shower in Hong Kong is from 4 – 17 of this month, and the peak period was at 3:00 am today (15/12) when the number of zeniths per hour reaches as many as 140. One of the the best places in Hong Kong to watch the shower is the Sai Kung Country Park.

At about 2:00 am this morning, two men, near Ham Tin Village, Sai Kung, called the police for help, saying they were surrounded by wild dogs and wild boars. The police rushed to the scene and rescued the uninjured men who were taken out of danger by police officers.

The popularity of star-gazing in Hong Kong meant that the roads to the Country Park were heavily congested, with thousands of star-gazers jamming beaches and other areas to get a good view. One of the most popular places to gaze up to the heavens is Sai Wan, where a new star-gazing terrace has recently opened.
