Government announces $13 million for rehabilitation of Sai Wan area

In 2018 the Countryside Conservation Office (CCO) was established under the Environmental Protection Department. Its mission was to protect the natural ecology of the remote countryside, revitalise the architectural environment of villages and conserve cultural as well as heritage resources.  The Government earmarked $1 billion to support countryside conservation initiatives implemented under the CCO. $500 million of this was deployed to provide financial support to local non-profit-making organisations (NPOs) and villagers through the Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme (CCFS).

The “Sai Wan Area Rehabilitation Project” is one of two rehabilitation projects to be supported by the CCFS. The Sai Kung District Community Centre Limited successfully bid for $13 million for the project. It aims to rehabilitate the original rural ecology of Sai Kung Sai Wan Village and collect, organise and display the cultural and historical information of Sai Wan to assist the preservation and continuation of Sai Wan culture.

The specific contents include the establishment of a tourist information center in Sai Wan Village, the restoration of ancient wells in the village, the reclamation of barren fields with an area of ​​nearly 60,000 square feet for agricultural land restoration, optimisation of the surrounding natural habitat, and ecological monitoring. In addition, the school will also organise school education groups, volunteer activities, various workshops and experience activities to promote public awareness of the West Bay and raise environmental awareness.
