The SPCA (Sai Kung Centre) at 7 Sha Tsui Path, Sai Kung
Inspectors of the Hong Kong Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals rescued 4280 injured or trapped animals in 2023-2024, the society reports. There were 21,000 calls to the 24-hour rescue hotline. The suffering endured by animals is almost always due to ignorance, neglect or apathy, rather than violence.
The society has 22 inspectors headed by a superintendent who rescue animals and investigate and prosecute offences under The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance in tandem with the police. They have set up the Animals Watch Scheme combining the resources of the society and the police with those of the AFCD, Society for Abandoned Animals, and Hong Kong Veterinary Association.
If you know of an animal suffering for whatever reason call 2711 1000. If you want to adopt an animal never do so from a market or shop because you will be encouraging puppy mills and associated cruelty. Always adopt from the SPCA or reputable charities such as Catherine’s Puppies or Sai Kung Stray Friends Foundation.
SPCA have a Centre in Sai Kung in Sha Tsui Path open six days a week, providing consulting, surgery, laboratory, x-ray and minor hospitalisation facilities to members and the local community; also an Adopt-a-Pet Centre in Man Nin Street.
The SPCA is almost entirely dependent on donations because only 1 per cent of its funding comes from the Government. Donate to HSBC 002-5-240326 one-off or monthly. You can sponsor animals, back the inspectorate or have your animal’s likeness displayed at the SPCA centre at Tsing Yi for five years or you can have a personalised plaque on show there. Other ways to donate are to the Cinderella Veterinary Medical Fund, which supports homeless animals with medical needs, or the Cat Colony Care Programme that neuters street cats and feeds and cares for them. Also, unusually, you can mark your wedding with a donation to SPCA.
