A 12 year-old Dalmatian in Tan Shan Tsuen, Tseng Lan Shue, Sai Kung was suspected of being severely malnourished due to the negligence of his owner. His body was emaciated and he was unable to stand or even raise his head. He was found stuck in a fence where he had likely been a while, possible trying find food and water.
Following a concerned call from a resident nearby, Debbie Chow (local rescue and animal welfare volunteer) raced to the scene to help him. Catherine Lumsden (founder of Catherine’s Puppies) in Sai Kung received the call reporting his condition and initiated the rescue. She insisted that Society for the Protection of Animals and the Police were called to meet the dog and his ‘owner’ at the vets. The owner claimed the dog had been fed that morning and was mobile but his condition suggested he had not eaten, had water or been in good health for some time.
The vet at Pets Central gave a statement to support the opinion that the dog was terribly malnourished and even if he had underlying health issues (which the owner claimed had caused his skeletal appearance) and he was more certainly not being cared for in any acceptable way.
The owner was taken to the Police Station for questioning and the dog, Oreo, was taken to the SPCA to be cared for until the situation is resolved.
Catherine Lumsden told BUZZ “Time and time again nothing is done about cruelty and neglect to animals in Hong Kong. As of today I have no more information to update about Oreo’s condition at the SPCA or the Police investigation. I am following up but speaking from my own experience, very little will be done and the best I can hope for is that the public outcry for the voiceless to be heard will eventually lead to changes – and more will be done to punish offenders”.
