Two people were rescued from a sinking yacht off of the Tung Lung Chau Lighthouse on Saturday (31/10) morning. The 9-meter yacht ran aground in heavy seas after hitting the reef and rocks. Some reports state that there was a malfunction with its engine.

The two sailors jumped into the sea as the yacht started breaking up. Tourists on the island saw what was happening and called the emergency services. Marine police boats and Government Flying Service helicopters arrived to help with the search and rescue. Owing to the rough seas the rescue was not easy, but the two people were finally rescued.

The police launch then took the two people to the nearby Clearwater Bay Country Club. The 60-year-old male victim and his 53-year-old girlfriend were unharmed and refused to be sent to hospital. Afterwards, the two people left on their own, and the yacht involved ran aground on a nearby rocky beach, leaving it to be smashed by the wind and waves.
