Seven mainland drivers will learn to drive minibuses for Sai Kung PLB (Maxicab) (No. 1 & 2) Company at the beginning of next month and take the driving exam at the end of next month.
Mr Fung, general manager of the company said that it has been approved to employ up to 30 drivers from the mainland under the transportation industry labour importation plan. Currently, seven prospective drivers have arrived in Hong Kong, and another 15 are waiting for approval documents from the Mainland Labour Bureau. He pointed out that the entire application process takes a long time. Excluding the time for interviews and recruitment in the Mainland, after finding a suitable driver his information must be submitted to the Immigration Department. The relevant approval will take about four weeks, and then he must submit it again. Approval from the Mainland Labour Bureau also takes about four weeks.
Fung said that after arriving in Hong Kong, the mainland drivers recruited by his company will receive both private and light truck student licences. Accompanied by senior drivers, they will drive the company’s construction vehicles in Sai Kung to familiarise themselves with the routes. Regarding the recent attention paid to the low passing rate of foreign driver licence exams, he pointed out that when his company hire foreign driver drivers, they were informed that If they failed to pass the driving test after coming to Hong Kong, they could retake the test only once again. However, if they failed again, their contracts would be cancelled and the company would look to hire other mainland drivers.
