Sai Kung restaurants: Merry go ’round just keeps aspinning

The premises previously occupied by 2084 has new owners – with a boring taste in colour

Restaurants come, restaurants go. The latest to depart the Sai Kung scene is 2084. Earlier SingaLing was shuttered.

James Bradshaw returned from overseas and apparently convinced wife Naz to pull the plug on 2084. Sing and Ling, partners in life and business, closed their shop on Po Tung Rd. Retailers are struggling for many reasons: an exodus of residents, China’s economic woes, a near-collapse of the stock market, long Covid and a general loss of confidence.

James is a serial entrepreneur, opening, from memory, three restaurants in the Kung. Expect to see him and Naz popping up somewhere fairly soon.

Singaling recently closed its doors

Competitors Sing and Ling, partners in life and business, closed their shop on Po Tung Rd, but are open at their relatively new store, The Square, which has a good location in the town centre.

The original Jaspas closed when Castelo Concepts closed down

The Castelo Concepts Group ran into difficulty following founder Wayne Parfitt’s death and two local restaurants were closed, Jaspa’s and Piccolo. The former has reopened run by its chef. Other investors have launched La Verde on the Piccolo site.

Yesterday a worker was re-painting the frontage of ex-2084 in boring grey. New investors are having a punt there too. We trust their food will be better than their taste in décor.

“Just like dust, we settle in this town

On this broken merry go ’round

And ’round and round we go

Where it stops nobody knows

And it ain’t slowing down

This merry go ’round.”

— Excerpt from song by Kacey Musgraves
