Sai Kung promenade trees – response from District Council

Trees along the Chui Tong Road waterfront from Sing Kee restaurant Tui Min Hiu are also under threat

The recent story in BUZZ by Guy Shirra concerning the proposed removal of trees along Sai Kung Promenade has elicited dozens of objections being sent to the District Council and CEDD. Both District Councillor Christine Fong, and The Sai Kung District Officer have written in reply – their responses are below:

Dear our Sai Kung Residents,

Re: Trees Removal Response

Thank you for your emails and calls regarding the tree removal along the Sai Kung promenade.

We all recognize that the promenade is a beautiful and vital space for both residents and tourists, offering opportunities for rest and leisure.

Trees play a crucial role in our community’s well-being, and I have reached out to CEDD to emphasize the importance of preserving them.

In response, CEDD port works division has received many comments from residents and they are welcome to gather the feedback from stakeholders upon the notice.

The preliminary assessment was conducted earlier and they committed to a detailed assessment which will be carried out later for public concern, in order to balance the safety and the greenery of our promenade.

I will continue to advocate for the preservation of our trees and encourage the planting of additional trees and shrubs to enhance the beauty of this iconic area in our community.

Thank you for your engagement and support. Best regards, Christine Fong Sai Kung District Councillor 90123993

Dear Mr Shirra,

Thank you for your email about the proposal of tree removal for seawalls in Sai Kung Town.

We have already conveyed your comments and concern to the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) for their consideration.  We understand that CEDD has no intention to commence the tree removal works at this stage.

CEDD will first review the proposal, in consideration of comments/concerns received, condition of the trees and the potential risks.

Thank you again for your concern about community affairs.

Yours sincerely, (Scarlet PUT )for District Officer (Sai Kung)

BUZZ has since learned that the proposed destruction of trees is not just confined to the promenade. Notices have also appeared on trees along the Chui Tong Road waterfront from Sing Kee restaurant to Tui Min Hiu.
