Police officers joined forces with Customs Maritime Joint Task Force personnel to conduct an anti-smuggling operation in the Sai Kung area in the early morning today (11/12).

During the operation, officers discovered a suspicious speedboat without its navigation lights on, approaching the shore off Tai Mong Tsai Road, and found eight men on the shore moving goods from a private car to the suspicious speedboat. The officers immediately took action, and the men jumped on the speedboat and fled towards Port Shelter at high speed.

The police then launched a pursuit, but the speedboat eventually fled the eastern waters of Hong Kong and headed towards the mainland.

During the operation, officers seized a private car suspected to be involved in the case and a batch of dried shark fins, dried seahorses, bird’s nests, computer central processing units and smokeless tobacco at the shore, with a total market value of approximately HK$1.3 million. The case is being investigated by customs officers and no one has been arrested yet.

This is the second time this month that a smuggling incident took place along Tai Mong Tsai Road; on 3 December 590 Kgs of shark fins were seized in a similar location, and the smugglers again took off in a speedboat to the mainland..
