Dr William Richard Tinlin, a dentist who lived at Green Peak Villa in Sai Kung, has died of a heart attack at home, friends say. His colleague, Dr Jain Sandeep, has high praise for Richard. “He was a very gentle man, always with a smile on his face. He was like the cat that ate the cream. He was nice to patients, very caring, there was not a bad bone in his body. He had lots of love and respect for people. He was quite a sports person, very good spirit. We shared a love for curry and had many lunches together. Everybody in the clinic remembers him as a lovely man.”
As a young man, Richard gained a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, moved to Hong Kong, set up a practice named after himself, and was the Cathay Pacific dentist for about 20 years. Later he merged the practice with Smith and Jain Dentists. Richard was well-known in Sai Kung. Short, stocky with a large head and straggly hair, he was often seen lunching at The Conservatory with friends.
Richard was a gregarious character, “who never stopped talking,” one pal said. When young he was athletic, playing squash and golf and running in the hills with the Hash House Harriers. He was also a keen member of the Welsh Male Voice Choir.
