Only a few venture out as stormy weather lashes Sai Kung

With T8 storm Tapah lashing Sai Kung, only a few intrepid souls ventured out to exercise on the waterfront this morning. When the wind gusts were so strong they were trying to sweep me off my feet I’d crouch down and hang on to the stone sea wall. The sea was spectacular, foaming-white and lashing the rocks in a fury. Boats were crashing together.

A dragonboat was half sunk. Most birds were sensibly tucked up somewhere safe; only a  couple of sparrows, a few pigeons and a solitary black-collared starling were out in the wind. I sat to admire the storm’s performance in the dark-grey harbour downwind from a banyan tree, but got nervous and soon moved on.

The indefatigable dancing ladies were not visible this morning

There have been many sad cases of people killed by falling trees. Normally, there are dozens of people exercising on the waterfront, but today there were only eight in the early morning slot 6:00 to 7:00 am. The mature ladies who walk while dog-paddling — that’s how they look — at Waterfront Park stayed safely at home.
