Sai Kung residents have the highest rate of owner-occupied properties in Hong Kong; monthly income is only the third highest in Hong Kong

The latest population data released by the Census and Statistics Department yesterday (26/3) reveals that 50.1% of the population in Hong Kong lives in “owner-occupied housing”, with Sai Kung District having the highest proportion at 64.3%; followed by Eastern District at 60.9%.

The five districts have the highest number of people living in owner-occupied homes.

  1. Sai Kung – 64.3%
  2. Eastern District – 60.9%
  3. Tai Po – 60.5%
  4. Tsuen Wan – 59.7%
  5. Sha Tin – 56.4%

The district with the fewest owner-occupied properties is Kwun Tong with only 30.7% of residents living in owner-occupied homes; however, it also has the largest number of households in Hong Kong, reaching 250,000.

Among all households in Hong Kong, the median monthly income was highest in the Central and Western District at HK$45,000; followed by Wan Chai at HK$43,300; and then Sai Kung at HK$40,600. However, the proportion of homeowners in the first two districts was lower than that in Sai Kung, at only 53.2% and 48.8% respectively.
