Speedboat escapes, trucks seized along Sai Kung shore as police uncover over $10 million worth of smuggled cigarettes

A law enforcement operation by the Eastern Division of the Marine Police, together with the Customs Marine Investigation Team, conducted early yesterday morning (9/5) resulted in 2.26 million suspected illicit cigarettes with an estimated market value of approximately HK$10.2 million and a dutiable value of approximately HK$7.5 million being seized.

During the operation, a speedboat without navigation lights was spotted approaching the shore of Tsam Chuk Wan, Sai Kung, and several suspicious men were seen unloading goods from the speedboat onto a truck on the shore.

Officers immediately took action, and the men jumped onto the speedboat in question, fleeing at high speed towards the waters east of Hong Kong. After a chase, the speedboat ultimately escaped the Hong Kong jurisdiction.

In addition, officers discovered another truck on the shore of Muk Yue Tau, which was also carrying suspected smuggled cigarettes. Officers seized 226 boxes containing approximately 2.26 million cigarettes. The trucks involved were also impounded. The case is currently under further investigation by customs officers.
