Photographer Bruce Foreman, resident in Sai Kung for two years, has launched a China bicycle tour business. From March Bruce will lead cyclists on “city escapes to heritage destinations and forgotten villages” in Fujian, Guangxi and Guangdong.
A rangy Australian, he has a diverse background: masters degree from Macquarie, teaching, conservation in Uganda, guiding in China, Nepal, Tibet and Vietnam, and CNN journalism and photography. Bruce describes himself as a documentary and travel photographer. He has photographed celebrities for the Hong Kong International Film Festival including Wong Kar Wai and Johnnie To, Kylie Minogue, Catherine Deneuve and Charlotte Rampling. He writes on restaurants for CNN Travel’s Best Eats and has sold 20,000 copies of his Yangshuo Cooking School recipe book.
Bruce says the celebrities of his bike tours are the local farmers who act as guides, cook food straight from their fields, and host groups in home-stays.
In Fujian from March 6 to 8 there will be a ride through tea fields and missile-silo-like clan houses called tulou, built as fortresses by Hakka since the 12th Century.
From March 20 to 22 he will be in Yangshuo, where he is programme director for the Yangshuo bike festival, an event on wheels with art and music. Riders will experience the limestone-karst landscape, mud-brick architecture and “the best rice noodles in the world”. A similar event will be held at Yangshuo in September .
