“Women on the water” is the theme of a five-day event at the Hebe Haven Yacht Club at the end of this month. It is part of a global initiative by World Sailing, the governing body of the sport. Named “Steering the Course”, the programme provides opportunities for women worldwide to get into sailing and learn coaching and race management. It will take place from 27 May to 1 June on the water at Port Shelter and in the function rooms of the HHYC.
The event is broken down into components:
TASTER SESSIONS where women are encouraged to try fun sailing. A sailing boat called MoHan plays a role here and if you’re female and want to sail on MoHan you’ll have the opportunity to do so on 28 May, if you book quickly. MoHan belongs to the Sai Kung charity Sailability.
UPSKILLING ON THE WATER: Experienced officials will teach participants how to select courses for sailing boats and how to adjust them for weather and sea conditions.
RACE DAY: The sailing festival will conclude on 1 June with a Ladies and Girls Regatta. Female crews will battle it out on the water in PHS Division big boats, Onedesign classes and Dinghy classes.
WHAT ELSE IS ON? Wine tasting, guest speakers and a long ladies’ lunch.

“She loved the sea. She liked the sharp salty smell of the air, and the vastness of the horizons bounded only by a vault of azure sky above. It made her feel small, but free as well.” George R.R. Martin
