Renovation has begun at the Tiu Keng Leng police station readying it for a new role as a heritage centre. It is the sole surviving building from the Kuomintang era in the place once known as Rennie’s Mill. The heritage centre scheme is a joint effort by the Sai Kung District Council and District Office, Maureen Siu, District Officer, said. A hiking trail will also be set up, linking Duckling Hill, Section 3 of the Wilson Trail and the Mau Wu Shan observation post.

After the end of the civil war and the founding of the People’s Republic, remnants of the Kuomintang settled at Rennie’s Mill.  In 1961, the police station was built on Po Lam South Road. After the squatter area was cleared in 1996, the white police station building became home to the Po Yin Fat Yuen monastery. Four years ago the district council proposed the building’s use as a heritage centre.  Monastery chief Lau Kin-kwok and his family were told they would have to move out and other housing was offered. Lau refused this offer, and two years ago he was forced out, dramatically setting fire to his arm.

Completion of the Tseung Kwan O heritage centre and hiking trial is expected by the end of next year.
