Malaysian professor Khaw Kim-sun was sentenced to life in jail yesterday for the Sai Sha Road murder that astounded Sai Kung three years ago. A jury of five men and four women, notable for their youth and casual dress, had earlier unanimously declared Khaw guilty.

The red-robed judge, Judianna Barnes Wai-ling , a commanding figure in Court 22 of the High Court, said, “It is shocking that a highly educated and successful man would conjure up such a calculated method to get rid of his wife.” Judge Judianna noted that Khaw stood to inherit his wife’s share of several properties. Khaw was shaking his head repeatedly. The judge said, “There is only one sentence to pass.” Three of Khaw’s children were in the public gallery with their aunt. They began to cry and Khaw looked at them.

The children will now be without parents as Khaw faces decades in jail. (Khaw’s second child, Lily Khaw Li-ling, 16, was killed accidentally because bad weather meant she had not gone to school. Lily joined her mother, Wong Siew-fing, in her yellow Mini-Cooper. It had a carbon monoxide-filled ball in the back emitting lethal fumes.)

The court heard how Khaw and Wong had an unhappy marriage after Khaw began an affair with a student who was also his children’s tutor. Estranged, the couple still lived together with the four children. Khaw and his lover carried on the affair for years, often travelling together. Khaw and Wong discussed divorce but did not act on it. Wong told her yoga teacher that Khaw did not want a divorce because she would have inherited her share of his properties.
