An eye-catching spectacle enthralled people in Sai Kung town on Sunday evening, 16 December. The Sacred Heart Church held its annual candle-lit Christmas Nativity Procession, led by the much-loved pony, William.

Despite his advanced age, 24-year-old William showed no sign of fatigue after a long journey in a horse box from his stable in Pok Fu Lam. He set a brisk pace around town with a young girl, dressed as Mary, mounted on his back, accompanied by Joseph on foot, and carrying the infant Jesus swaddled in a blanket.

Safety was paramount, and William had two handlers and his own veterinarian in attendance. Two police officers monitored the traffic as the procession left the church and headed downhill towards the town centre.

Little girls dressed as a host of angels followed, accompanied by parents, friends and church-goers, in a candlelit procession that delighted the early evening crowds thronging Sai Kung Town.

As the procession made its way across Man Yee Square, basketball players paused in amazement at the sight of a pony, with a young girl on his back.

The astonishment on the faces of diners at the seafront restaurants turned to delighted smiles as people realised what was happening.

Safely back at Sacred Heart Church, William enjoyed some pony nuts before patiently posing for a photo call with dozens of admirers.

Later, adults and children filed into the church, still carrying their candles, to sit in front of the Live Crib with Mary, Joseph and the Baby Jesus, for a carol service with Christmas readings and lessons.

This delightful event ended with everyone enjoying festive goodies, mulled wine and soft drinks outside the church.

The magic of Christmas is in the air!
