Matilda the Musical by the Royal Shakespeare Company has arrived in Asia this year after a tour of Australia and New Zealand attracting five-star reviews. It is based on the classic by Roald Dahl, adapted for the stage by Dennis Kelly with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.
A sampling of reviews:
- The Independent: The Royal Shakespeare Company’s “well-drilled production finds just the right balance between gleeful grotesque humour and heart-warming poignancy.”
- Daily Telegraph: “The songs fizz with humour and great take-home melodies. Kelly and Minchin look like the brightest prospects for British musical theatre since Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice broke through” more than 40 years ago.
- Daily Mail: “Here is a family show with sufficient cruelty to satisfy teenagers, parping noises to tickle the under-tens and enough sentimentalism to make parents reach discreetly for their hankies.”
Matilda the Musical is running from 20 September to 20 October at the Academy for Performing Arts’ Lyric Theatre. Roald Dahl’s story is about a brilliant child, Matilda, who is unloved by her TV-obsessed parents. They think her love of books is weird. Matilda, 5, is sent to school at Crunchum Hall, terrifyingly presided over by ex-hammer thrower Miss Trunchbull, who enjoys cruelty to children. Matilda shows even more cleverness at Crunchum Hall and stands up to the bullies. The whole class rebels with her. The show becomes hilarious when Miss Trunchbull goes off in the number “The Smell of Rebellion”.
Tickets are available now from $445.
