Early this morning an ATM at Nanyang Commercial Bank in Man Nin Street, Sai Kung was destroyed by an aggrieved customer.
Police received a report around 1:30 am from a 42-year-old man, alleging that the ATM at the Nanyang Commercial Bank Self-service Bank in Man Nin Street, Sai Kung, was fitted with a pinhole camera. The police arrived and found a disturbed man wearing a tank top and shorts, with the two cash machines and check deposit machine extensively damaged, the cover was lifted, and parts – such as batteries – were scattered all over the place.
Reports say that the man claimed that hundreds of thousands of HK$ deposits had disappeared from his accounts, and he suspected that the ATM was equipped with a pinhole camera. Police have not ruled out that he “disassembled” the ATM with his bare hands and arrested the man on suspicion of “criminal destruction”.
His mother was contacted and accompanied him to the police station. Fortunately, after a preliminary inspection, it is understood that there was no money stolen from the ATM.
