Yesterday morning (12/8) a 62-year-old man drowned at Clear Water Bay Second Beach even though it had been closed to the public. The swimmer had ignored the Leisure and Cultural Services Department’s “beach closure order”.
The incident occurred at 8:00 am when others on the beach saw the man in difficulties in the water. He was rescued by them and they called the police for help. The man fell into a coma and was rushed to Tseung Kwan O Hospital by ambulance, but he was certified dead on arrival. The police are investigating the cause of the accident.
The Hong Kong and Kowloon Lifesaving Staff Association stated that the incident did not occur at a normal duty time. The beach was also closed to the public. When the lifeguard arrived at the beach early to prepare for work, he received a report from some members of the public saying that there was a suspected drowning on the beach.
The lifeguard performed first aid such as extra-cardiac pressure and AED until the ambulance arrived, but the victim was in a coma and remained unconscious before being sent to the hospital.
