BUZZ reported the illegal road building in the Sai Kung village of Shan Liu on 5 August. The Lands Department (LandsD) recently took action and confirmed yesterday (28/9) that their Sai Kung office received a complaint from the public in early August. During the later inspection, LandsD found that the fence on the government land was destroyed, the village road was widened and the plants beside the original village road were removed, all illegally.
The 12 long-abandoned houses
The department immediately took land control action. Between the end of August and mid-September, the contractor was ordered to erect government land notice boards, stone markers, fences and gates on government land to prevent people from occupying it again. In addition, the LandsD has also referred suspected illegal felling of trees and widening of village roads to other relevant departments for follow-up.
The illegal road construction
Shan Liu Village is located adjacent to a country park close to Sai Kung town. It has a peaceful and quiet environment. Part of the land is designated as a conservation area. Sai Kung District Councillor Debbie Chan pointed out that as early as July she had received complaints that 12 small houses on the west side of the village had been left vacant for a long time, and recently someone was reclaiming land on both sides of the hillside on the west side of the houses and widening the only road connecting the properties to Shan Liu Lower Road.
