A scene from the 1992 movie
“Aint no party like a Holy Ghost party, ’cause a Holy Ghost party don’t stop . . .”
Nun: “Who can name all the apostles?”
Deloris puts her hand up.
“Yes Deloris.”
“John, Paul, George . . and Ringo.”
These are quotes from “Sister Act: Back to the Habit”, a musical comedy being brought to you by the Hong Kong Singers. The show will be staged at the City Hall theatre from 8 to 10 December.
It tells the story of Disco Diva Deloris, who witnesses a murder and goes into hiding in the one place the cops will never look — a convent. Disguised as a nun, Deloris finds herself at odds with an uptight Mother Superior. Using her disco moves and singing talent, Deloris inspires the choir, bringing new life to the church. But she blows her cover. Gangsters give chase. Only to find themselves up against the power of the Sisterhood.
Stumped by Covid-19, Hong Kong Singers has had to postpone or cancel some shows. But the theatre group is determined to be back this December. And throughout the month the Christmas Carol troupe will be singing classic carols in four-part harmony in various Hong Kong locales.
Since 1931, the Singers have been performing all of sorts of shows from Gilbert and Sullivan to West End and Broadway hits. Most recently they turned on “Songs for a New World”, “Shout! The Mod Musical”and “Putnam County Spelling Bee”.
