Video catches man throwing stones at Sai Kung cows; police investigating

Screen shot from online video

Sai Kung’s cows are very docile and do not fight with people, but some people are extremely cruel. One Sai Kung resident recently filmed a man throwing a stone at the head of a cow on the edge of the pavement near Lakeside Gardens.

The incident happened at around 4:00 pm on 18 July and a video of the incident was uploaded online a few days ago by a woman called April. In the video, a man wearing a cap, white shirt and grey trousers was seen throwing a stone at a cow. The cow was hit on the head, and turned around and ran away in fright, but the man continued to walk towards the cow and bent over to pick up another stone. The video did not capture whether the man continued to attack again.

Volunteers quoted April as saying that the man had been lingering at the location for several days. She had called the police on the evening of 18 July, and the police arrived at the scene the next day to collect evidence. Volunteers urgently searched for the video that captured the attack, so that the police would have more evidence for investigation.

It is understood that a cattle welfare volunteer rushed to the scene after learning of the incident, but the man involved in the case was no longer there, and the cattle suspected of being attacked had no superficial injuries.

In response to inquiries from Hong Kong Animal News, the police stated that the Sai Kung Police Station received a report from a citizen who claimed to be an “animal volunteer” at about 8:30 pm saying that a man suspected of throwing stones at a cow on Chui Tong Road in Sai Kung at about 4:00 pm.

After receiving the report and investigation, the police classified the case as “cruel treatment of animals”. The second team of the criminal investigation team of Wong Tai Sin Police District (the criminal investigation team specialised in investigating cases of cruel treatment of animals) is currently following up the investigation. No one has been arrested yet.
