Sai Kung’s finest home-grown charity, Sailability, took 5192 people to sea in its yachts last year. Founded by the late Mike and Kay Rawbone in 2009, the charity has now given 28,206 people sailing experiences. Most of those (17,100) were disabled physically or mentally, sometimes both.
Sailability operates a fleet of boats from its base at the Hebe Haven Yacht Club. Oversight is by a board headed for many years by the late Barry Hill, a Sai Kung resident. The chief executive is Kay Rawbone, recently awarded the British Empire Medal for her sterling work, while the leader of the instructor and volunteer team is Edison Tang Bing-fai.
The charity is registered, but not financed by the Government. It depends on donations from individuals and institutions (see the website here). Here you will find ways you can sponsor a disabled sailor or even a school.
“Sailing increases communication, self-confidence, independence, responsibility and self-esteem,” the charity says. Volunteers are wanted. Support Kay, Barry and Edison and the rest of the team today.
