Young woman pushing meerkats in pram enrages animal activists; police informed

Meerkats are sociable animals

Nothing I have seen in 26 years in Sai Kung has made me so angry. A young woman was pushing a pram with two meerkats in it. This expletive expletive — you know what I mean — is evil to have participated in the illegal wildlife trade and been party to transporting gorgeous creatures thousands of miles from their home in the wild in Africa.

I will inform the police and the SPCA. The woman was seen with the meerkats on the footpath outside the Lok Yuk Kindergarten at about 4:15 pm on 29 August. The only other meerkats in Hong Kong, to our knowledge, are at Ocean Park, which is fine; they’re looked after by professionals.

Hong Kong is a major transit hub for the illegal wildlife trade, which is contributing to the global extinction crisis, the World Wildlife Fund says.

Meerkats are promoted as pets online even though many countries ban their ownership

The expletive expletive above we can safely assume has paid smugglers so she can acquire the cute meerkats and flaunt herself on social media with the exploited animals.

Meerkats are small mongooses native to southern Africa. They really do stand upright looking as cute as cute can be. They are social animals forming packs of two to 30 individuals. They have broad heads, big eyes, pointed snouts, long legs, a thin tapering tail and a brindled coat pattern. The coat is light grey to yellowish-brown with faint bands on the back.

Meerkats are good at tunneling. They construct burrow systems typically 16ft in diameter with about 15 openings.
