During the National Day holiday, the frequency of minibuses to East Dam, Sai Kung will be increased; display screens in Pak Tam Chung to announce traffic conditions

During the eight-day National Day holiday in mainland China, more tourists are expected to go for outings in the East Dam area of High Island Reservoir in Sai Kung. The Hong Kong government said yesterday (29/9) that it will take a number of measures to deal with the situation. Among them, the number of minibuses on the 9A route between East Dam and Pak Tam Chung will be increased to no less than 30 vehicles, which is six times more than the usual weekend; a display screen will also be set up in front of the AFCD gate in Pak Tam Chung to announce the road traffic conditions leading to the East Dam area.

The East Dam of High Island Reservoir has been overcrowded during holidays in recent years, with the May Day long holiday being particularly crowded. Due to the National Day holiday, which begins on 1 October and finishes on 8 October, the Transport Department has coordinated with the minibus operator of Route 9A to increase weekday services and overtime operations to meet demand. The number of minibuses will be increased from four on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays to no fewer than 30. Reserve vehicles and drivers will be available, and overtime operations will be flexible to accommodate traffic control measures.

The Transport Department will also install an information display panel in front of the AFCD barrier in Pak Tam Chung to announce traffic conditions leading to the East Dam area. Law enforcement agencies will deploy targeted measures, including deploying uniformed personnel to patrol Pak Tam Chung, Man Yee Road in Sai Kung, and East Dam.

Temporary traffic control and crowd management measures will be implemented as necessary to ease traffic flow and ensure tourist safety. The department will also continue to crack down on illegal taxi driver behavior. The Water Supplies Department has completed temporary improvement works at certain locations on Man Yee Road to facilitate the passage and avoidance of vehicles.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department will strengthen management of the East Dam Country Park area, including deploying additional patrols, maintaining order, and enhancing cleansing services. The department will also collaborate with the Hong Kong Tourism Board to publish crowd flow information in the area on its website to facilitate travel planning.
