The Drainage Services Department predicts severe flooding in 11 areas across Hong Kong, with water levels ranging from a minimum of 0.6 metres to a maximum of over 1.5 metres, primarily in the New Territories and outlying islands.

Drainage Services Department (DSD) Chief Engineer Yuen Ka-wai said the department has assessed the flooding risks in higher-risk low-lying coastal and windward residential areas across Hong Kong based on the highest sea level predicted by the Observatory, and has assumed a scenario in which all preventive measures would be ineffective in the event of black rain.

The 11 high-risk black spots for severe flooding in Hong Kong are:
1. Tai O
2. Lei Yue Mun
3. Sam Mun Tsai New
Village 4. Tai Po Market
5. Ka Wo Lane, Tuen Mun
6. Low-lying areas in central Yuen Long
7. Low-lying areas in northwest Yuen Long
8. To Tau Wan Village, Ma On Shan
9. Nam Wai, Sai Kung
10. Tung Chung Wan
11. Kat O Fishermen’s Village

The flooding hotspots in Nam Wai, Sai Kung

In Nam Wai and Heung Chung areas of Sai Kung, as some village houses near Nam Wai Road are close to the sea and located in low-lying areas, storm surges may cause flooding of more than one metre in the areas. Residents in the area have constructed homemade flood barriers on their properties.

Hong Kong Observatory is expected to announce the T8 signal at 2;20pm today (23/9) with higher signals predicted later tonight/early tomorrow. BUZZ reminds readers not to venture along the Sai Kung Waterfront during the typhoon as many Sai Kungers remember the damage from Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018.
