The large influx of mainland tourists who visited Hong Kong on Lunar New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, overwhelmed several popular camping spots in Sai Kung. Yesterday (4/1), social media showed photos of tourists “camping” along a drain, with two tents visible, eventually prompting police intervention. Netizens described the behaviour as absurd while others mistook it for bandits “surveying the area.”
Police stated that at 7:02 pm last night (4/1), they received a report that unidentified individuals were camping on a riverside drain near Sam Long Village and Tseng Lam Shue Village in Sai Kung. Upon arrival, officers found two mainland Chinese men and women (aged 61 and 62) holding two-way permits. They claimed to be hikers who had hiked from the Wilson Trail to the location to set up camp and rest. They left after being advised by the police. The case is classified as a “complaint of harassment”.
