The tragic death of a four-year-old girl killed by a car while crossing Clear Water Bay Road remains under investigation. According to Senior Inspector Jacky Chan, police are studying whether the evidence justifies a charge of dangerous driving causing death against the 56-year-old driver. They are also considering whether the mother bears any legal responsibility for the child’s death.
It was an accident that shocked residents. A Pak Shek Wo neighbour said, “It is so awful. A lovely little girl will never see her fifth birthday.”
According to witnesses at about 1:00 pm on 17 August, a 30-year-old woman was standing with her two children, the girl and her seven-year-old brother, in the middle of Clear Water Bay Road near Pak Shek Wo waiting for the traffic to clear so they could cross. The woman was not holding the children’s hands. The little girl suddenly ran onto the road. A seven-seater van was coming, at speed. The child was struck. Her body was flung into the air. She landed about three metres away.
Ambulance staff arrived quickly. The girl had suffered serious head injuries and was declared dead at the scene. The driver was arrested.
Whether charges will be laid may be known by next week, Jacky said.
