We are in the middle of the nomination period for the Village Ordinary Elections. Many of the villages in Sai Kung and Sai Kung North Rural Committees areas of interest have had vacancies for the Rural Representative for many years. For the health of representative society in the New Territories and the welfare of our local community we should ensure that all elected posts are filled. Although this position is basically a consultative one with little real authority, with the full support of the residents the Rural Representative can make a difference – see SCMP story on Hervé Henri Bouvresse of Long Keng. The nomination period ends on 22 November.
To qualify for nomination as a Rural Representative (not to be confused with the Indigenous Inhabitant Representative) you need to be an elector for the Existing Village; aged 21 or above; a Hong Kong permanent resident;a resident of the Village for the 6 years immediately preceding the nomination; and nominated by at least five registered electors from that Existing Village.
Sai Kung Rural Committee is within Sai Kung District, so nomination forms etc have to be obtained from the District Office in Hang Hau. Sai Kung North Rural Committee is part of Tai Po District, so the paperwork is available from the District Office in Tai Po.
