Sai Kung taxi driver nearly strangled and then robbed by passenger who stole car, money and phones

pak tam chung nightEarly this (9/5) morning the passenger in a taxi driving from Po Toi O Village, Clear Water Bay to Sai Wan, Sai Kung Country Park attacked the driver, trying to strangle him with a rope, stealing $2,200 in cash and three mobile phones. The robber then stole the car and drove away, leaving the taxi driver four kilometres away from the nearest habitation.

The taxi driver had picked up a male passenger in Po Toi O Village to go to Sai Wan, but while driving along Sai Wan Road around 1:30 am, the passenger suddenly put a rope around the driver’s neck and robbed him. The robber not only took the cash and the three phones, but then stole the taxi and drove towards Pak Tam Chung.

The driver, a 57-year-old surnamed Lee, chased after the car but ended up walking the four kilometres to the Country Park wardens’ post at Pak Tam Chung taking more than an hour in the dark. The police and ambulance were then called. After being treated by the ambulancemen on the spot for a neck injury the victim refused to be sent to the hospital.

The police set up barricades in the vicinity to try to intercept the stolen taxi, but with no success. The case has been classified as “robbery” and “unauthorised removal of transportation”. The Criminal Investigation Team of the Wong Tai Sin Police District is currently looking for a Chinese man aged about 40 to 50 years of age, of medium build and body dressed in a black shirts and black cap.
