Fishermen accidentally catch shark in Rocky Harbour, Sai Kung – video

shark 2Three men line fishing off High Island Reservoir in Rocky Harbour, Sai Kung in a small glass fibre boat got a surprise yesterday (28/6) when one of them caught a big grey-white fish more than 1 metre long. It  looked like a shark.

The anglers were eager to video the big fish in the water – see clip above taken from the Internet. Some in the film shout, “Wow, so close, catch your mouth (translation)” Others said, “It’s horrible.” Later in the film, a man was ready to cut the fish wire and let it go, but it had freed itself from the fish hook, and fled the scene and returned to the sea.

The fish in the video has been identified a grey reef shark, a coastal-pelagic and inshore species common on coral reefs, often in deeper areas near drop-offs to the open sea, and in shallow lagoons adjacent to areas of strong currents. It is often seen cruising near the bottom but will visit the surface, particularly to investigate food sources.

Grey reef sharks are inquisitive, and in seldom-frequented areas divers have been approached very closely by several of these sharks, particularly when they initially enter the water. However, once the sharks’ curiosity is satisfied they usually retreat and remain at a distance.
