Green Egg Island
A man drowned while snorkelling on Green Egg Island in Clear Water Bay, Sai Kung yesterday afternoon (7/7), and was pronounced dead on arrival after being sent to hospital. Around 3:00 pm police received a report that five people who were snorkelling around 10 metres off the island had got into difficulties. Marine police and fire services were called to the scene, and a helicopter of the Government Flying Service was called to help with the search and rescue. One of the group, a 43-year-old man, fell into a coma after being rescued and was sent to Tseung Kwan O Hospital for emergency treatment, but was confirmed dead on arrival. The other four were not injured and refused to be sent to hospital.
According to local Chinese language media, the deceased and his four friends were hiking in Tai Au Mun, Sai Kung in the afternoon. When they reached Green Egg Island at about 2:30 pm, they decided to go snorkelling. The waves were quite strong and they soon got into difficulties. The deceased was swept away by the waves and drowned. Attempts to rescue were unsuccessful. One of the friends swam to the shore by herself and called the police, while the others waited in the water for rescue.
Several family members went to the hospital to learn about the incident. Marine police officers seized a waterproof bag with a pair of fins at the scene. The cause of the incident is being investigated.
Located in the east of Clear Water Bay Peninsula, Green Egg Island, formerly known as “Rotten Pai”. The island is named because it looks like a green poached egg from a high altitude. There are small sandy beaches on the island, the water is clear and sandy, and the nearby waters are crystal clear, so it has the beauty and reputation of “glass water”. There are also a small amount of coral outside the island, which some netizens call Hong Kong’s “Maldives”. There have been a number of diving incidents near the island in the past few months:
