A falling-tree accident occurred in Mang Kung Uk, Wai Sum Village, Clear Water Bay, Sai Kung yesterday (7/6). A royal poinciana (Flame Tree) about 20 metres high collapsed and damaged five cars. No one was injured in the incident. A villager revealed to the media that he had complained to the authorities that the tree was dangerous, but the authorities said that there was no immediate danger and did not deal with the report.

The Lands Department replied that it had received complaints about the tree and assigned a contractor to inspect it. After reviewing the report submitted by the contractor, the Department has instructed the contractor to remove the tree. The Department stated that the contractor has been instructed to follow up on the tree collapse incident and check whether the nearby trees are safe. It will also review the performance of the contractor in handling related complaints and make appropriate follow-up actions.

The incident happened at 11:30 am, when a 20-metre-high and one-metre-wide flame tree suddenly collapsed and hit five private cars in the public parking lot, four of which were damaged, with a Porsche suffering the most damage with a dented bonnet; the left window glass of a white car was broken with the rear-view mirror damaged, and the rooves of grey and red cars were also damaged. Fortunately, there were no drivers or passengers in all the cars, and no one was injured in the incident.

Reporters at the scene noted that the tree was planted in a stone flower planter and had completely uprooted. Firefighters arrived at the scene after receiving the report, cutting the trunk with a chainsaw in the rain to remove the fallen tree, and sawdust and flame flowers were scattered on the vehicle bodies and the ground.
