Two drowning incidents, one fatal, occurred at Clear Water Bay Second Beach over the past two days.
At 9:03 a.m. on Sunday (6/10), police received a report that a 62-year-old woman was in trouble while swimming at Clear Water Bay Second Beach, Sai Kung. She was later rescued by a lifeguard. The victim was unconscious and was sent to Tseung Kwan O Hospital.
It is understood that the victim and her sister went swimming together in the morning, but separated later. At the time of the incident, lifeguards found the victim floating in the water, so they worked together to rescue the injured woman and then called the police. After the police and ambulance personnel arrived at the scene, the injured person was breathing and had a pulse, but fell into a coma.
The Hong Kong and Kowloon Life Guards Union posted a Facebook post calling on the public to swim at locations and times where lifeguards are on duty. The post stated that the lifeguards went on duty at the lookout just after 9 a.m. and found a woman lying prone in the shallow water near the shore, and immediately sounded the alarm. Other lifeguards immediately rescued the drowning victim ashore and performed rescue operations. After about 10 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and AED shock, her breathing and heart pulse were restored, and then the ambulance crew sent her to the hospital, where she is in critical condition.
Early yesterday morning, around 6:00 am (7/10), a man was floating in the sea about 10 metres away from the beach. After being discovered by other swimmers, they worked together to rescue him to the shore and immediately gave him first aid. Paramedics arrived at the scene and the man was unconscious and sent to Tseung Kwan O Hospital for emergency treatment, but sadly he eventually died.
The cause of death has yet to be determined after an autopsy.
