A feral bull was hit and killed by a taxi around 6:55 pm last night (3/10). The green taxi was travelling along Sai Sha Road towards Ma On Shan when it knocked the bull down. From the clips provided by local media readers and online videos, it can be seen that the front of the car was almost turned into scrap metal, with the cow was lying in the middle of the road. Blood can be seen coming from its mouth and nose and tears streaming from the corners of its eyes.

A member of the Sai Sha Sha Road Cattle Guard Team said that the bull was 3 to 4 years old and named “Ka Chi”. It originally lived with the cattle in Che Ha Village. Recently, it wandered to the opposite side of the main road near Nai Chung Village: the accident occurred when it was crossing the road to return to Che Ha Village.

The scene of the accident

She said that after the incident, Ka Chi’s left and right hind legs and abdomen were injured and he could not stand; there was also blood oozing from his mouth and nose. She continued that there are currently about 30 to 40 cows living in Che Ha Village. However, due to the crowded environment and insufficient grass in the village, and some of the exits from the village blocked by road works the cows go out in the direction of Wu Kai Sha.

Another Cattle Guard Team volunteer, choked up and said, “It’s so sad.” She said that when the place was first developed, some villagers asked her to help take care of the cattle. She has been a volunteer for seven years. She watched “Ka Chi” be born back then. Now that the tragedy has happened, she said it is “very difficult to accept”. She also said a collar mounting a GPS tracker on Ka Chi snapped on impact, indicating the taxi must have been driving at a very high speed.

The damage to the taxi shows how far it was going

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department stated that it received a notification from the police tonight that a cow was injured by a vehicle at the above location and requested the department’s assistance. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department immediately sent personnel to the scene and found an adult cattle lying on the road. After examination by the department’s veterinarian, it was confirmed that the cow was dead and the carcass would be disposed of by the relevant departments.

After investigation by local media it has been confirmed that the taxi was driven by local actor Choi Kin-shing, best-known for his role as “Angel B” in the 1999 classic Street Kids Violence. Choi, 61, has appeared in over 60 movies, mostly in the 1980s and 1990s, in roles from assassins and rascals to bodyguards and thugs. He also appeared in the TVB half-hour sitcom Come Home Love: Lo And Behold. He now drives a taxi in his spare time.

Local neighbours try to comfort the bull

This is the second time Choi was involved in a traffic accident on Sai Sha Road. On 12 August 2022, Choi’s taxi was hit head-on by a Tesla driving on the wrong side of the road, with the actor suffering injuries to his rib cage.

Choi Kin-shing played the role of “Fairy B” in “The Three and Five” and was praised for his incisive performance

Karina O’Carroll, convener of Sai Kung Bovid Watch said “Carnage is the only word I have at this moment, mixed with aching rage and fury. Another life lost, another taxi completely totalled.

The speed at which this poor bull was hit is horrific. He died, slowly and in horrific pain. A victim of development. A victim of indifference to a species that sits in legal grey area. A victim of insane driving. An animal seen by some as ‘livestock’, a nuisance to others, but a beloved member of our collective home to the majority. They feel. They think. They have personalities, just like you and I.

I HOPE the police do their job and throw everything at this case. I will be writing a long email tomorrow pushing them to ACT. There have been too many lost over the 15 yrs SKBW has existed, almost always taxis. If you can’t see a cow, you shouldn’t be driving. If you can’t drive with enough awareness of your surroundings to brake for animals, you shouldn’t be driving.

So much to say but too angry to say it now. RIP big boy, you didn’t deserve this 😞🐮🤍
