Brindy Mason, Sai Kung’s finest female fighter, will take part in the Sport Ju-Jitsu International Federation championships in Chiba, Japan, from 18 to 21 September. Brindy recently joined Mixed Martial Arts and won her first two fights, easily dominating her opponents. She specialises in throttling opponents until they submit. Brindy is a former Hong Kong and New Zealand ju-jitsu champion who has also won world titles competing in the USA. Her father, Vaughan, a golf professional, lives in Nai Chung Old Village, Sai Kung and keeps SAI KUNG BUZZ updated on her progress.
In a message to BUZZ, Brindy said, “I’m competing in purple belt, GI and No GI featherweight division (59 kgs and under) and purple belt open weight.”

Now Brindy lives in Thailand. When she was here in Sai Kung, she was coached by Andrew Wong-kee, who’s Sai Kung’s Mike Tyson. A former New Zealand boxing and karate champion, Andrew also won world ju-jitsu titles. He runs a gym in the centre of town on the first floor opposite the Picture House. If you’re a morning exerciser you may see Andrew and his students on the Red Brick Road behind the sports stadium, lifting and shoving around weights like enraged bulls.
Sport Ju-Jitsu International Federation is one of the world governing bodies of Brazilian ju-jitsu fighting. It aims to have the sport accepted in the Olympics.
