Police in Sai Kung intercepted eight individuals suspected of being involved in a smuggled cigarette case. Around 6:00 am this morning (12/8), authorities received a report from villagers that more than a dozen suspicious individuals had landed near Sheung Sze Wan. Police responded and intercepted the eight individuals at the waterfront. Upon investigation, all were found to be Vietnamese nationals in possession of recognizance papers*. They were subsequently taken back to the police station for further investigation.

It is reported that officers conducted an anti-contraband cigarette operation in the nearby area earlier in the morning. During the operation, the smugglers fled in all directions when they found out that police were on to them. Two men were intercepted after landing on a boat. It is suspected these eight people are related to smuggling activities.

* Recognizance papers are issued to individuals who have claimed asylum in Hong Kong, allowing them to remain in the territory while their claim is being assessed. Recognizance is a form of conditional release, meaning the individual is allowed to stay in Hong Kong under specific conditions, often requiring them to report to immigration authorities periodically.
