Last week Chinese language social media reported that Wong Shek campsite in Sai Kung East Country Park, had tents and other structures that looked permanently lived-in. During a recent patrol of the campsite, staff from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) discovered that some individuals were occupying multiple campsites for extended periods with tents and other large amounts of belongings, inconveniencing other members of the public.

Yesterday (22/6), the Department sent personnel to the site for clean-up. Campers suspected of occupying the campsites for an extended period moved their belongings and left. The department also cleared all unclaimed tents and related items from the campsite. To facilitate facility maintenance, the Wong Shek Campsite will be temporarily closed from today until further notice.
The Department (AFCD) reminded the public in their post that camping facilities in country parks are public spaces provided for short breaks and enjoyment of nature, with the aim of allowing more people to use them in rotation. The department will continue to closely monitor the use of camping sites under its jurisdiction, strengthen patrols and management as needed, and take appropriate follow-up actions to ensure that country park facilities truly serve the public.
