11 smugglers caught in Sai Kung; customs seize $4.1 million in bird’s nest and electronic products

Last Wednesday (6/12), the Marine Police East Division Task Force, together with officers from the Customs Marine Investigation Team, conducted an anti-illegal immigration and anti-smuggling operation in the area of ​​Pak Sha Wan and Nam Wai in Sai Kung. During the operation, 11 men were stopped in Nam Wai. Smuggling activities were seen being carried out near the road, and a total of 12 boxes of bird’s nests, mobile phones, tablets and computer hosts and other suspected smuggled items were intercepted, with a total market value of approximately HK$4.1 million. The case was handed over to Customs officers for continued follow-up.

The police said that during an operation, law enforcement officers discovered that a man was driving a suspicious speedboat without turning on the navigation lights to the shore of Nam Wai Road. A private car was parked there, and 10 men were wandering nearby. The customs officers saw the box-like cargo on the boat being loaded onto the speedboat. Upon seeing this, law enforcement officers immediately took action to arrest the 10 men who tried to jumped on to the speedboat, and the driver. The speedboat then fled northeast at high speed. The officers found the batch of goods on the shore and in the private car.

The police and customs reiterated that smuggling is a serious crime. According to the Import and Export Ordinance, anyone who exports unmanifested goods may be fined up to HK$2 million and imprisoned for seven years.
