Early this morning (17/2) around 7:00 am a 60-year-old man was rescued by emergency services after he was reported missing yesterday afternoon. He was suspected to have lost his way due to heavy fog and ended up trapped after landing in the woods and ended up spending the night in the mountains. Firefighters and ambulance crews gathered outside Wong Chuk Shan New Village, Pak Kong Au Road, Sai Kung, and immediately climbed the mountain for search and rescue. A Flying Service helicopter circled the scene and finally found the victim’s paraglider and notified the firefighters to bring him back down the mountain. After examination, he was believed to have suffered no injuries and left on his own.
It is understood that the victim is a retired English teacher with more than a year of experience in paragliding. He and some friends made an appointment to go paragliding in Ngong Ping, Ma On Shan yesterday afternoon. However, due to heavy fog at the time, the friends decided to leave, and the rescued man was left alone at about 3:00 pm. After taking off he unexpectedly landed in a dense forest and lost his way. Neither his mobile phone’s GPS system nor the police’s “HKSOS” app could accurately locate it, so he said he had no choice but to spend the night in the dark forest. Having walked some way from his landing point he found a weak phone signal and was able to make a call for help.
The pilot later admitted that the weather conditions yesterday were not suitable for flying. He ignored the advice of his friends and more experienced flyers and insisted on flying. He revealed that got lost in the fog and could no longer turn back. After a looking around, he finally made an emergency landing on a grassy area on the forested mountainside.
