Enlightened Government to turn Yeung Chau into a Country Park and Nature Reserve?

by avril furst

Sai Kung Buzz has learned that there are plans to turn Yeung Chau, a deserted island off Sai Kung’s promenade, into a Country Park and Nature Reserve.

The existing dilapidated buildings would be converted into an AFCD country park warden’s office with the pier and harbour wall repaired and paths restored for walkers and birdwatchers.

The beautiful beach, presently only visited by kayakers and dinghy sailors, would be made available for swimmers and sun worshippers visiting by gaido from Sai Kung promenade.

The Nature Reserve would protect the existing natural fauna – including sea eagles and black kites – and the gradual importation of other Hong Kong fauna will be considered – civet cats, squirrels, barking deer, South China tigers, Burmese pythons, porcupines and pangolins etc.

The spaghetti tree, originally from the Mediterranean also flourishes in California

There is even discussion about introducing Pastadendron italica, the spaghetti tree, which although native to the hilly regions of the Mediterranean would thrive on the island.

It is also possible that some of Sai Kung’s ever popular feral cattle might be moved there along with neutered wild boar (although the latter might decide to swim ashore to the bright lights tasty treats of downtown Sai Kung; not a good idea!)

Buzz readers are encouraged to support this plan and make comments and additional suggestions which will be forwarded to local authorities.
