A 50-year-old Correctional Officer at Pik Uk Prison in Sai Kung was attacked by three assailants at a minibus stop outside the prison on 1 November last year after leaving work at noon. Detectives from the Organised Crime and Triad Bureau took over the investigation and subsequently arrested 13 people, including 11 local men suspected of “wounding with intent” and a man and woman suspected of “assisting a criminal.” Police announced yesterday (26/8) that one of the suspects fled to mainland China and was recently apprehended by mainland police and transferred to Hong Kong police. At about 4:10 pm the suspect, wearing a black hood and with his wrists cuffed, was escorted by multiple officers for a crime scene reconstruction.

Police earlier reported that the 11 men arrested on suspicion of “intentional wounding” ranged in age from 16 to 37. Their roles included carrying out the attacks, providing transportation for the attackers, and planning the attacks. The two men and women suspected of “assisting criminals,” aged 51 and 29, are understood to be acquaintances of the other arrested individuals and helped provide the criminals with a hideout to evade police.
The 13 people arrested earlier were suspected of “conspiracy to wound”, “intentional wounding” and “assisting criminals”, and some of them have been brought to court.

It is understood that police investigations believe that the mastermind behind the attack is a Sun Yee On gang leader who had served time in Pik Uk Prison and had a feud with the male correctional officer who was attacked. He arranged for Sun Yee On men to take revenge for him. One of the suspects who acted as a “water watcher” recognized the officer’s appearance because he had been imprisoned in Pik Uk Prison.
At the time of the incident, the assailants were travelling in a private car with a fake licence plates and parked five metres from a minibus stop. Three masked men then jumped out of the car and attacked the correctional officer with long, hard objects. As they fled, they also struck a 33-year-old mother and a two-year-old daughter who were nearby. The victim suffered six lacerations ranging from 5 to 15 centimetres on the head and upper limbs, as well as a fractured right wrist. The mother and daughter sustained minor injuries and have been discharged from the hospital after treatment.
