The 23-year-old man arrested at West Dam, High Island Reservoir on 11 June  suspected of possessing explosives appeared in Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Court today (13/6). The man was charged with one count of possession of explosives.

The prosecution applied to defer the case until 24 July, pending further investigation by the police. This includes the examination of the suspected explosives involved and the phone records of the defendant, as well any CCTV footage that might be available.

The defendant applied for bail, willing to pay a cash deposit of $10,000, promised not to leave Hong Kong, have a curfew order from 10:00 pm every night to 6:00 am the next day, and not go near the place of the crime. The defendant did not possess a passport and only had an expired home return permit. The Acting Chief Magistrate, considering the serious charges and strong evidence in the case, rejected his bail application. The other three men arrested alongside the defendant were granted bail.

The defendant, a truck-driver, was charged with the possession of a metal tube with a diameter of 2.5 cm and a length of 8 cm, containing 45 grams of explosives. The case alleges that at 3:00 a.m. on 3 June when police officers were patrolling the sea off the West Dam,  High Island Reservoir in Saigon, they observed flashes of fire and explosions. After further investigation, the police arrested four men, one of whom was the defendant.
